Congregation Berith Sholom is a Reform Jewish synagogue located in the Collar City of Troy within a half hour drive from any community within the Capital District. Historic downtown Troy is home to Russell Sage College and the famed Troy Music Hall. Nearby are RPI University and Emma Willard School. (See Directions for a map of the area.)
Berith Sholom has just celebrated 140 years and is housed in the oldest synagogue building in continuous use in New York State. The histroic Victorian era sanctuary is cherished by the membership and is a well known landmark in Troy. Membership in Berith Sholom is open to any person of the Jewish faith, or any family unit with one spouse/life partner of the Jewish faith. Details as to dues and requirements can be obtained though contact with our office at 518-272-8872. We are available to meet with prospective members on a one-to-one basis and offer tours of the synagogue and its facilities.
Judaism is more than a religion. It is also belonging to a people. Judaism gives us a sense of community. By becoming a member of a synagogue, you can find a spiritual home with like-minded Jews, a place to celebrate Jewish holidays, to share the joys of simchas and to find comfort and support during difficult times. A synagogue is a place for children to socialize with other Jewish children as they learn about their heritage. It is also a place of learning for adults, as we study the texts of our ancestors. We take a liberal approach to Judaism, finding a meaningful way to combine traditions with the modern world. We are a welcoming and inclusive congregation. Our members range in age from infants to seniors and our families are varied including singles, couples, and families with children in which there are two parents, single parents, intermarried couples and same gendered couples. We hope you will consider making Berith Sholom your home by becoming a member. You will not only benefit from the advantages of membership, but you will also be supporting Reform Judaism in the Capital District. Your membership enables us to provide the services that we offer to our members and to the community.
As new members, we hope you take an interest in all the wonderful programs that we have to offer. The more you give of yourself, the more you will be "rewarded." We always welcome your suggestions and participation.
We conduct many events that help bring people into our community. As an example, throughout the year, prospective members are always welcome at services, holiday celebrations, social programs, study groups, and social justice work in the community.
All new members are honored at a special New Member Service. We also invite members to participate in synagogue events throughout the year. Our committee strives to ensure that members have an opportunity to get to know each other better. We encourage our current members to bring friends and family members who are unaffiliated to our temple . We hope you decide to join our temple and we look forward to getting to know you.
